How To Find the Perfect upright

what do you guys look for when choosing an upright bass? I've rented basses for a long time and now am looking to buy a bass from Kolstein in New York.

I look for 2 things: carved back and made in France. I play standing up and the carved body feels a billion times more comfortable than a flat back. I also tend to gravitate toward French basses since IME they're a bit smaller than average, and being 5 foot 6 it really makes a difference.

Fwiw I've only rented, bow German, and play classical. (jazz on bass guitar)

Try every basses they have in the shop in your price range. And bring another bass player with you, that way you can also listen to the basses in front of them : where it really matters.

There is no perfect instrument. It's always a compromise. Physical and musical goals, desires and needs change over time.

Obviously you want to spend your bucks on an instrument that is or has clear potential to be sonically satisfying. After that I have come to value "well-built bass in one piece and likely to stay that way" more than anything. Much of the rest is setup, which translates as, "How much money do you want to spend to love this bass?"

The remainder is on the continuum between magic and obsession.
