| There is no perfect instrument. It's always a compromise. Physical and musical goals, desires and needs change over time.
Obviously you want to spend your bucks on an instrument that is or has clear potential to be sonically satisfying. After that I have come to value "well-built bass in one piece and likely to stay that way" more than anything. Much of the rest is setup, which translates as, "How much money do you want to spend to love this bass?"
The remainder is on the continuum between magic and obsession.
