how tall is a double bass...roughly

I know all bass aren't made equal but I just want a rough idea how tall a double bass is. So that I know it will fit in my car (ford fiesta) when I pick it up. If it helps here's a pic and its similiar in model to and estman 605. Im guessing its a bit over the 5 foot mark.

only way to know for sure is to get the bass (or a comparable bass) into the car. it's not just the length, but the awkward shape.

I emailed the Upton guys about this exact question. Here's Gary's response:

"Bout 82", I have yet to see a car that I cant work a bass into....even
if it is a little crazy!"

Worst case scenario is the bass goes in the front passenger seat, with the seat all the way back & reclined.

82 inches seems like its very tall thats nearly 7 foot!. I don't remember the bass being that big. Im holding a measuring tape standing up in front of me and it really towers above me. Is 82" with the endpin full extended? I'll probably have mine pushed in as far as it can go

Unfortunately, I've had to fight double basses in cars many times. Basses range from about 6-7 feet tall. You should always push in the endpin before you even attempt to put it in the car. I usually put it in the back seat and let the neck come to the front. It's uncomfortable riding in the car afterwards, but depending on the size of your car, it's not that bad. When I get a car, I'll probably just get a van.

to answer your question, 3/4 basses are usually 6 feet tall.

I have the full size eastman 605, I can barely get it into my small car, but it works, its just very tricky. It's about 6 feet with the endpin in, give or take.

I would think 75" on the outside, with a fat bag. Good thing is, one end is very skinny. If worse comes to worse, you can ask DrJones for a picture of his in his car. One of these may help:

It fits like a glove. No shoe horns required. Depending on how I have it, it either reduces vision slightly in the back and side or gets in the way of hand brake and gear stick. But it fits

I just wanna say one word to you. Just one word. "Minivan".

(preferably with the fold-into-the-floor seats)

Minvans have no "Kool" factor. Hint: The drummer claims he borrows it from his mom, but he's 49 and we all know it's his. Get a Volvo wagon.

I don't think volvo wagons are too far ahead of mini vans for the cool factor. Anyway its going to be small 1 litre cars until I have a full drivers license and a full time career and over 25. Just because of the sheer price of insurance.

That may be only true in the US. Some of the coolest vehicles I ever saw were the little microvans zipping around Tokyo's streets last week.

Any car with a bass in it takes on coolness by association.
