How to tell if it is a ply wood bass

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how to check if the bass is solid or plywood?

I know it is quite easy to identify the top, but it is hard to check the back and the side.

Any information is helpful and appreciated.

Many thanks

Look inside and see if the grain markings (lines, whorls, etc) are same as on the outside.

You can also tell ply backs by thumping with your thumb. Ply will have a little ring to it, solid a lot more.

Try to wiggle a dental mirror or something in the f-holes, and shine light in there.

Stick your Mini Maglite in the far f-hole and look through the near one. No, I'm not trying to be rude!

You can get a good look at the far side from this oblique angle.

You can also take a peek at the soundpost and see if its vertical in that plane.

Of course there are exceptions, but if the top and back are carved, odds are VERY high that the ribs are solid wood.
