However, I find that I have been having trouble obtaining a good "C" shape, it kind of ends up being more of a curvy-fancy L (a really tall C without much curve at the top) I have relatively small hands, i think.
A few of my peers in the bass studio at my previous school said it was a bit thick, i'm considering getting the neck shaved down if it seems to be on the thicker-side.
My Neck around the B 4th Note on the G string is 1.78in / 45.2mm at it's largest point according to my calipers.
How thick are your necks?

edit- it does seem quite large to my hand, although it is a 5 string with an all round large neck.

It's the shape as well as the thickness that makes a difference. I'm going to thin the sides of my neck a bit, leaving the overall neck thickness the same. |

On a five string is is bound to be pretty thick. But apparently no thicker than some four stringers. I think a five string Christopher 7/8 hybrid I played had an even thicker neck that was very handrail-ish. The contour of the Kremona handle is one of the most comforable I've ever felt. It feels to me like a large classical guitar neck. On the fiver it is a bit flat across the back, very much a C type of contour. It is not nearly as thick as it is broad, but it has just enough width to get good string spacing. Considering the dimensions of the instrument overall, it seems like a well balanced design:

Reduce the neck less than you think you want too. You can always take more wood off, but you can't put it back on. I've posted on this issue a few times in the past. Arnold S as well as many others more qualified than me have also discussed this issue. I incourage you to search for those posts. I'm not very savy at finding things on here(I'm just a cave man!), I'm sorry I can't direct you to them. Good luck.

I'll probably wait until the fall when i can try out some other peoples basses and see how their necks measure up, see if it makes any difference before i get mine changed... Too risky even on a cheaper bass like mine.
thanks |
