humidity help!

I have a carved upright and have always used a humidifier to keep the humidity around 50%. I live in Japan and we just had about 2 weeks of uninterrupted rain (rainy season). The humidity in my house has jumped to about 90%! Mold is growing everywhere.

What's the best way to manage getting the humidy down. Should I try to slowly control it?

Just turn it on. If you are concerned, put dampits in the bass.

It won't instantly reduce the moisture, so there isn't that much to worry about.

dammits

If you're trying to get the humidity down, don't increase it by putting wet dampits in the bass.
The dehumidifier won't bring the humidity down that fast, but don't put it right next to the bass.
I take it you don't have air conditioning there? That would manage the humidity. If you are getting mold and don't have AC then open the windows a little to get the air circulating. Even in wet climates like Ireland they prevent mold this way. The mold isn't good for you and you difinitiely do not want it on the inside of your bass munching away at the wood.

Basses have a lot more problems when they get too dried out than when the humidity goes way up so long as they don't get too hot; like the inside of a car on a hot day. Then say, 'good bye bass, hello repair bills'.

I opened up the windows and the humidity went UP!

I had to use some Tilex cleaner on the wooden bridge to get the mold off.
