Hungarian Bass

I recently bought a nice Hungarian bass, I believe it was made in 70s or 80s...here's a link to pics, the wood is amazing on it.

Really pretty! How does it sound? Another Evah fan, I see.

Hi, thanks. The bass is very light and resonant, the upper register is still thick and dark. The lower register is solid, maybe not as powerful as I'd like, but that almost certainly has to do with my level of playing at this point. Overtones are pretty easy to hear, much easier than my Kolstein Baker, so that has helped my playing a lot. The bass reacts very quickly, spicatto is loud and crisp, although the bass brings out the sloppiness of my bow control more than my other bass.
I actually changed from evahs to original flexocors a few months ago, I really liked the sizzle with arco on the evahs, but didn't like the sustain on the A and E for pizz, too boingy for me. The flexocors have the sizzle, are a little harder to bow, but seem to have a nice natural tone that brings out the resonance of the bass, plus my teacher has them on one of his Italian basses and I wanted to see how mine sounded with his.

I love the looks of your bass. I sense some history coming from it. Very nice indeed!

That bass looks very similar to one I've seen that's owned by a guy working at DePaul. HIs is also from the mid 1970s and has a great sound. I asked him about it the other day. He told me that neither he nor his luthier can identify the specific maker.

I think Arnold has (or had) one of these in his stable.

Thanks for the comment, it seems to be pretty hard to find any info on these. But I'm really happy to have this bass! Mine has been totally rebuilt, regraduated, new neck, ect. Before the work, the bass was heavy, top was really thick. Anyway, given the quality of the wood, it was worth re-doing the bass, and now it's killer. Don't know if it shows in the pics, but there's a fair amount of bearclaw on the top, and the maple figuring on the back and sides is amazing, not to mention the new neck. I'm almost overwelmed by this bass, I feel very fortunate to be able to play it everyday.
