I am not worthy!

Well, I picked up my new bass today and wanted to give a shout out to Arnold Schnitzer. My New Standard LaScala is truly a wonderful bass. When I visited about a month ago, Arnold was very helpful and patient with me. Imagine he took time out for me while working on Gary Peacock's bass! Anyway, the carved LaScala was THE bass for me as soon as I played it. Now I just finished playing for about an hour and could not be happier. Now, back to the bass. Thanks Arnold and Michael.

Congrats!

Congratulations on your new bass. I'm certain I speak for everyone when I ask for pictures. Anything from AES has got to be great. Is this fully carved or hybrid? Enjoy!

YOU BOUGHT MY BASS!!!!

Actually . . . I'm pretty sure that's the bass I played at Arnold's when I was there in late October. It was sweet. If I recall correctly, it was strung with Evahs at the time. I also assume that he received the actual tuners he intended to put on that bass.

Congratulations, I'm sure you will give it (sniff) . . . a fine . . . (sniff) . . . home. My time will come . . . hopefully.

O yes . . . PICTURES please.

I'm having trouble with the size of the pics. Bass Barrister, this is the same bass. Although the tuners had not come in to Arnold. I asked if he could install bumpers on the side instead. I knew you had your eye on this one as well, but I was fortunate to have sold three electric basses to help fund this. You're welcome, any time you're in the Boston area to come by and give it a whirl. I have to get my wife to help with the camera.

Hey Tom, in your image/picture viewing program there should be an 'Edit' tab above the open photo. Click on that then click on 'Resize' and make the photo the size that TalkBass wants. Save the resized pix to a folder and upload when you're ready.

I like the Evahs very much so far. The only thing I actually have to compare them to are the Spiros that are on my old Kay. The Kay is the only bass I've owned for the last... well, many years. Then again, there's really no comparison regarding any part of this bass and the Kay. No more feelings of inferiority standing next to a player with an Arvi in orchestra. And no worries about the nice arco passage in a musical. The only thing I think about now is why did I wait so long to get a Nice bass.

I think the bass for Gary was either a carved or hybrid Cleveland.

Tom, I'm especially intrigued by those tuners. I thought the only upgrade from the plate tuners was to a set of individuals with ebony turning keys.

Were these a standard upgrade, and if so, what kind are they?

These are not a standard upgrade. The ebony ones were not in stock and were on back order. I don't know what brand the are but I like them just fine. I asked Arnold if protective bumpers would be a good idea for this bass, and we decided that I could keep these tuners and he would install the bumpers. I'm sure those ebony tuners would be nice. These aren't too shabby either.

Those tuners are indeed "not too shabby". What kind of endpin did Arnold use on that bass? I forgot to look down there when I was checking it out.

You really should show a picture of the back. That bass was mildly flamed. Arnold also had a plainer wood carved body in the white available for the next order. He told me he does about three or four of these carved versions per year.

Thanks for sharing all this information with us. It's good to get a vicarious thrill now and then.

I'll try to take a few more pics in the next day or so. I'll get the back, ribs and endpin. One thing I'm finding is the slightly shorter scale length is much better for me. Something I didn't really think about when I first played it. Some etudes seem easier and the intonation is right there! Hard to put it down!
