Could be wrong, but I don't believe your garden-variety Cheap Chinese Bass existed back in the early to mi-70's...

I think this "basement flooding" issue could well be your culprit. If your bass got wet, or it spent a bunch of time in near-100% humidity, perhaps that did a number on your glue job. Pop goes the bass belly.

I see how you could think that, but this is an acoustic bass thread, and that's not exactly on topic.

I'd don't see how that would really be much of a problem if you monitored any swelling of you bass every day when you play it, and take it if you notice anything particularly out of the ordinary.
