I need feedback/input or whatever pun you'd prefer.

Hello everyone,

I am an advanced player on the electric bass (guitar) with a quickly "advancing" skill level on upright. Yes, I'm moving along very smartly, and become "pretty darn good" (my opinion, of course). At any rate; I've been performing on a Stagg EUB for sometime now, and I'm in the market for an acoustic. I need some opinions/reviews on a possible purchase. What are your thoughts on the Merano MB100 Double Bass?

More specifically; what do think of the following deal I stumbled onto through a random search?

Merano MB100 Double Bass with Bag and Bow

Thanks in advance.
Yours,
me

Don't forget the price of a set of strings, having the bridge fitted and a decent soundpost cut for it.

I'd pass.

Do a search for "merano".

No. What you linked to was what we call a bass-shaped object (BSO). It would make a lovely planter or fine kindling wood. Unless you are willing to do the setup work yourself, engage in substantial modification, and nurse along an instrument that will never sound good, stay away from such cheap junk. The minimum investment you'll need to make for a decently built, properly set up new instrument is about $1500. There is no way around it, there is no shortcut, there is no magic. You will spend it one way or another and the best way to spend it is to start with a good instrument. The value of a proper setup simply cannot be overestimated. Buy from a real bass shop and avoid on-line mass music retailers and guitar shops.

Forewarned is forearmed.

I hope you have this saved in a word document. It seems like you say something like this every day.

What would you say if you saw an offer for a "new, high end, hand crafted, exotic wood, neck-thru, active PU" electric bass for 50 bucks? Same applies here. Just because Drurb repeats himself doesn't mean he's wrong

I took it in the friendly way you meant it. It actually was quicker for me to re-type what I did rather than searching and linking or doing a copy/paste. I sure do agree with you about people not using the search function. Either people are just lazy, don't realize that this age-old question would be so common, or both. If they would use the search function, they'd actually get tons more information as well.

Anyway, as you've noticed, it's kind of a mission of mine to help people avoid spending money on crappy BSOs. I'd prefer that all newbies ended up with worth instruments that they love playing. That's not gonna happen but I'll take 'em one at a time.

On a lighter note... I'm new to the double bass and I'm wondering what bass I should get. I looked on eBay and saw a bass for $500 dollars. Is that a good idea? also what is the best type of roundwounds for the bass? Thanks!
