I need your help on suggestions for what to purchase WITH a new bass...

Hey all,

I'm purchasing a new bass for my school's instrument collection, and the bag, bow, and rosin will be included. Other than that, I was thinking a stand as well, perhaps a spare set of strings. Still, I've probably got about $500 or so which I need to spend on "accessories related to support and upkeep" of the bass.

Can you suggest other items I should consider buying?

Thanks!

Are you planning on playing out with it? Unless you're going to play classical in an orchestra and nothing but, I'd say get a pickup. I recommend the Clef Revolution Solo from Upton Bass.

Depending on where you get the bass, it may have placholder strings (lots of internet instruments come with these) so you will need a decent set of strings. Most likely, any bass that comes with a bow will have sub-par bow so I would consider putting that monet towards a decent bow. For a school I would question buying a $500 bow unless you can trust the bassists to take care of it, but a cheaper but good bow (i.e. Gollihur's brazilwood bows that go for $150) could be a good in between option. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure the stand is something you want. A bass on its side on the floor won't fall any further, but a bass on a stand, in a room full of newbies, almost surely will at some point.

Case for the bow. Bib to help avoid damaging the bass. Quiver to hold bow while you are playing lots of pizz.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

For now, the pickup won't help, as it's mainly for my students, and they won't have to worry about playing out (at least for now).

Good point on the stand: I'll save the $$$

I've actually got one of AH Bob's bows for myself, and perhaps I'll keep it on campus for the moment, as I'm usually using my Ary at home.

Boy, I would have felt stupid if I didn't get a quiver Thanks for reminding me!

Unless the bass was already supplied with a professional setup by a qualified luthier, I would almost certainly put the money toward that.

Otherwise, I would use it to have a cool flame job painted on it!!!

Actually, it's set up to Barry Green's specs, and I trust him (he's my former teacher). I'll try it out to be on the safe side, as I am going to pick it up at the shop.
