I officially have a DB :D

Well, as I said I would, I visited Thwaites earlier today.

I've picked up a fully-carved, English DB circa 1880. Not sure who made it, however. Sounds beautiful, was the pick of the litter in my price range for rental.

Just thought I'd let you know!

Congrats! In case you don't know the rules:

No pictures, no bass!

Okay, let's see 'em.

English? 1880?- rental? Sounds like something you might want to try to rent to own-since it is fully carved and this is your first experience with the DB, make sure you get some instructions on how to take care of it(if the owner didn't provide care of a carved DB for you already) I am not surprized that you got a bass and are on your way. This passion that you have for the DB is a gift. Happy for you that you are receiving it and doing something to share it with others. That's what its all about. IMO

With lots of Bass Love, Wayne

Thanks everyone, pictures to follow in the next few days! I'm in my last few days of the term at university so I dropped the bass off at home until I finish.

Wayne - yeah, a truly great deal. Unfortunately they don't offer rent-to-own, they will, however, knock the first few month's rental off the price should I decide to buy in the future. What tips can you offer in caring for a fully-carved DB, they told me some general things but it was quite busy in the shop and they didn't have huge amounts of time.

Do some targeted searches here and you'll find a wealth of information.

I usually don't pay any attention to what durb says but he has a good idea here-Just kidding doctor. I just had a student bring in a bass with a crack almost all the way from saddle to middle of the f hole- reminder to all- It's like Bill Weaver told me when I got my first carved bass---when it's too cold or too hot outside for you, it's too hot or too cold for your carved bass. I would think that the owner has insurance on it, but out of respect for the instrument, you are wise to take care of it. I think Gollihur and Upton both have tips on taking care of a carved bass. If you don't find anything, pm me. Looking forward to those pictures.

just kidding durb

Just an update - I have a tuner in the post, as I didn't get one when I was at the shop! It's a rather good model though, with a microphone that clips onto the bridge and measures it. I have near-perfect pitch, but it's more difficult at lower frequencies for me.

My term at university has just finished, and I don't go back until January 16th, so the time between now and then will be spent studying; both for my academics and for the double bass.

Finally, I just had a piano and orchestral concert, I played to over a thousand people as the solo pianist, and then with the orchestra and concert band on the clarinet. I performed Chopin's Waltz in B minor, and Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 by Liszt.

Thanks guys!
