Identify This Bass Game

OK here we go again, no label, string length about 39.5".
Lower bout is about 24.5" if I recall. It has a neck replacement
and scroll graft done by Sam Kolstein in about 1960.

The front table is fine grained spruce. The tuners are individual
style as you can see.

The bass is physically quite heavy for it's size.
It is a flat back without much flame. The centerline
of the two piece back is slightly offset - assymetric.
I think the new neck was set at a higher angle to
give near 6.5" bridge height. The 1960 board is bevelled.

Here is a pic of the F-Hole, with the width exagerated by the
camera angle. Top of F is near centerline of C-bout area.

neck and button

Here they are: (sans bib)

Sorry focus is a bit soft, camera had a hard time locking in.
On the button shot, the assymetric seam is seen orginating
from the bottom of the splice on the left side, the right is
just a short crack that was repaired in 1960.

THX!

Thanks Ken, you are very generous with your knowledge.
The records from Kolsteins shop (which are computerized)
show the neck was added in the 1960 restoration, and the
scroll graft is clearly visible.

Restoration

I can not lay my hands on the email from Kolstien's shop,
but it basically said "full restoration and back repair", (without
specific wording about the neck).

The neck does indeed have new/different varnish, and those
tallish ebony spacers besides the heel also appear new.
The neck seems like it was specifically reset to make it
easier to play the higher registers and also louder, by
increasing both the angle and the (overhang/ standover/
what_everyou_call_it). The scroll is the standout piece to
me and the tuners appear quite old, and perhaps are
original, but my eye is not trained enought to say for sure.

I discouted the claimed french heritage when I bought it
and did not pay a french price, but that scroll does bear
some resemblense to some french basses of 19th century.
But I guess the button on the back is clearly indicating it was
a blockless bass, and rules out any "french connection".

As an aside, this bass was owned by Arnold Fishkink for
many years, who has a long interesting discography back
to the days of Bunny Berigan's and Jack Teagarden's big
bands.

That's either a new neck or it was lengthened at the block end.

My guess, July 23, 1937.
