Inflatable Bass

This could probably fit in the Bass Humor section, too:

I'll bet it is described as having an open, "airy" sound.

I think it's a Yamaha Silent bass air bag attached.

Folks may laugh at this idea, but I've been to some pretty heady acosutics workshops where other people were doing very interesting work using inflatable bladders surrounded by a lattice type framework to produce very functional acoustic instruments. Thin films, especially balloon type, have some incredible acoustic properties to them. I believe it was Tim White who used to publish the Journal of Guitar Acoustics who made some very interesting variations on this theme. I sat in on one of his workshops along with Richard Schneider in approx. 1997 where he brought out several examples.

I'd guess some of our resident engineer types can add a bit. I only spent seven years in college, so I defer to them.

If filled with helium, one can do a pretty interesting show on stage.

Mein Gott! I was sitting with some luthier friends in a bar in Copenhagen last August during Bass2012. They were basically dissing a rival presenter over his EUBs, saying that no matter how good one sounds, the audience wants to see a real bass. I don't know who came up with it, but this very idea was discussed!

Hey, if they could just get the neck and fingerboard assy to fold; then we'd be able to get in a Smart car.

If you haven't seen the video just yet, just skip ahead to 0:58. It reminds me of my uncle on taco night. RIP, brother.

And when you're not playing it, you can rent it out to kids' parties as a bouncy ride! Ka-ching!
