J. F. LOTT on ebay or another bass rip off?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

What do you all think about this one?
Another bass with a "fake" id?

Nuno

Looks German to me and the bass/label looks way too new to be made in the early 19th century. Look at the edges of the label... they're perfectly straight as though someone just cut it out yesterday and glued it in there.

Thumbs down

I've seen loads of these really obvious fakes trying to be passed off as great instruments, and i know some of them might be good basses, but of course it's wrong to say it's something that it isn't. Is it not illegal? Does Ebay just turn a blind eye when they hear of this? Some people must be getting ripped off, at least some amount of the time with this sort of nonsense..

Lotts of Lunk

This doesn't look like John Lott's work to me, and the back as seen through the f's looks brand new.
Lott also made instruments for Vuillume that are still being passed off as Guarneri del Gesu's and Strads. His workmanship was first rate.

Corsby

Ken,
I had a Corsby cello and the scroll carving and varnish on this bass looks very similar. I don't see John Lott in it, and the dovetail neck joint sure looks German.

I agree. This bass looks very German. Varnish and wood reminds me of a Framus bass from 1954 I own, but the model and purfling is different, so I wouldn't say it's a Framus. The tuning machines are of German origin for sure.
However, I live 50 km from Darmstadt and if I had found this auction in time I would have been interested in having a closer look ...

I would agree if you'd say: "People who own Lotts -- and know who Lott was -- don't sell them on e-bay"
