Jazz/Classical Student Model in Canada

Hello,
I have decided that a DB purchase is my top priority musical purchase, and therefore seek help.
I can't decide between what I want to specialize in, so I'd like something that can do everything.
I honestly know next to nothing about DBs, so anyhelp or points in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

If it's your "top priority musical purchase" and you know next to nothing about double-basses, then I suggest you actually start reading this forum up and down to find out what interests you. That's the only real way to go about it.

Getting an answer on this thread will be tough, since people have been answering the same questions by new bass players over and over again. The fact is that if you really are interested in learning more about double-basses to aid in your "top priority musical purchase", then you should really be doing your own research on it.

That said, I would suggest you find a bass luthier somewhere near you so that you can ask him/her questions based on your research so that you can get an authoritative answer. Here's a head start for you:

What Drake said, and read everything in the Newbie Links, too. That should keep you busy for quite a while.

Good luck!

I know some stuff, but would probably still be scoffed at by music snobs. And I know of teachers, I just need help with finding an instrument in Canada.

Don't worry about snobs, there aren't enough around here to be a problem.
And fill out yer profile, people like to know who they're talking to....especially if you're asking them to go out of their way to help you.

How much you wanna spend on a bass?

The teachers might be a good place to start... they may know of someone with a used bass for sale. After I bought my bass and had my first lesson, I noticed for-sale ads at the conservatory.

You're in Manitoba? Surely there are a few double basses for sale in Winnipeg. Even Long & McQuaid might have something. Here's a Luthier in Manitoba, maybe he knows of something:

MN, Winnipeg, Zdzislaw Prochownik, (204) 831-0055, prochownik@hotmail.com • mts.net/~prochown
Bows, instruments

Why not order from the States? With the exchange rate being favourable, you'll find a fair deal. I ordered a Hawkes from Upton and couldn't be happier.
