Jiri Povolny

Does anyone know anything about Jiri Povolny and the basses (and cellos) he makes outside Prague. He works in a 17th or 18th Century converted watermill, and I've read some of his papers on acoustics and wood... and was just wondering if anyone has seen, heard or played one of his instruments (they tend to be copies of 17th & 18th century Italian models)

Thanks

Louis

Jiri and Barrie Kolstein made my bass. It is a copy of a Guadagnini and my exact bass is pictured on this site:

This was the first copy offered for sale at Kolstein's. I met Jiri and his business partner at the ISB convention. I have also recieved some good comments on my bass from some players in the Minnesota Orchestra.

If anyone has trouble viewing the pics on that site, try replacing the instances of "%5C" in the address with a forward slash (/).

Nice looking basses! I've personally never seen a top with such a huge ring pattern as you can see in the Guadagnini model. http://www.rudolphfiedler.com/basses...guadagnini.jpg

I think I'd go to A440 even if I lived closer to Shanks. With the extra cash........hmm........,I would get it set up like Edgar Meyer's bass with the ext FB and latched extension and STILL save some money!!!

I guess I wouldn't have much money left after that setup, but it would still be better than spending 14k on just the bass.

Nice bass for 11k. I wonder if it is hand carved or machine made. What do you think, Ken?

Really? How'd they accomplish that?

well Jiri did about 75% and then Barrie finished it off. So Jiri did the most. Barrie told me that now Jiri does even more and he less.
