Johannes Kohr Bass

I play for a local theater 3-4 nights a week and they have a rented Johannes Kohr Bass that plays and sounds pretty dang good. I love the setup on it but I do not know anything about these basses. I think it is a European laminate. Does anyone else have any experience with these basses?

I believe they are actually Chinese--not quite a Shen but far ahead of Palatino-class instruments.

A friend has a Kohr laminate that I have played quite a bit. It is very playable and has nice dark tone. The only cause for concern is that shortly before Christmas the neck snapped in two while the thing was just setting in the bag. It was a clean break and easily repaired.

"Johannes Kohr" is a German-ized version of the name "Howard Core", the company in Alabama that brands and sells them. They are re-labeled Christopher basses. So you have an American company selling Chinese basses with a German brand name. Talk about globalization!

I have a hybrid busetto model (K64B), and I enjoy playing it. It's my first DB, and folks who hear it say it sounds really good (the bass, not necessarily my playing).

I don't regret buying it.

This is a K61 and it seems to be rather inexpensive but it plays well and does not sound bad at all. Thanks for the info.

I've seen / played one of these laminated basses. Not too bad depending on price you get it for. Sound was surprisingly good for a laminate. Construction looked a bit fragile and fit and finish definitely not-so-good. I'd call it a $1K bass tops. Definitely not an investment, but not bad as an expense.

Fingerboard on the one I saw was dyed mystery wood, and the dye was wearing off pretty fast. At least it didn't have that stuff that flakes off and buzzes when it cracks. I have seen that same bass 3 years in a row at the same outdoor festival, so at least it is holding up well to that kind of wear and tear. The owner is very pleased with it.

For People Searching for Info about Kohr

I have used a Kohr K54 C for nine years as my main bass for jazz. It was (and still may be) marketed by Howard Core as Kohr's lowest price fully carved bass.

Bob Beerman (luthier) kept calling it a Strunal when he worked on it this week. [ But he kept correcting me when I said "Howard Core" and would say "James Core" too. ??? ] Great guy. Bob, that is.

I was also told a while back that some Kohrs are from China, and other are Czech. Brent's old post below seems to agree.

So perhaps Bob was right about the Strunal thing. A wee bit confusing. Not that it matters all that much to me. The label says "Johannes Kohr ... Made in Czech Republic" in 1998.

Bob said it was a sturdy bass. For what I paid in 1999, he thinks I got a good deal. And since I had it appraised later for twice what I paid, I guess I've got a good appraisal too.

On the down side, it is rather heavy, and the sprayed on "varnish" is shiny enough to burn your retinas.

I've never had any serious issues with it. I had the original bridge and tailpiece wire replaced some time ago, and just recently had a new soundpost installed, a FB dressing, and had the nut shimmed and new strings slots cut. I think it sounds good and plays good, but admittedly have little to compare it with.
