John Juzek Bass?

Hi;

Did Juzek have model numbers such as 401?

This is decribed as: A double Bass Hand Crafted with SOLID CARVED SPRUCE TOP, Maple Back with some flame, Hand Inlaid Purfling, and EBONY fittings.

I asked for a pic of the interior label and the rear of the bass near the heel. I've not received pics or any other info as yet.

I'm wondering if this is a china knockoff?

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Hmmm, good question. Mine from 1955 has #403 on the label, I assumed it referred to the number of basses made, but maybe it is a model number.

Juzek

Eric,

Is your bass fully carved or a hybrid?

Whom ever was making the bass' for Juzek, were they producing hybrids back then?

Cheers,

Paul

I don't recall Hybrids then. I believe the Laminated/Plywoods were supplied by Lang and the carved Basses from Wilfer. All of the Juzek labels were put inside the instruments in the NYC shop. Model numbers could be put on the labels as well. Mine said 'Master Art' and was there in 1966 when I first visited. I bought it in 1971 as it was still there hidden away in the back room. If you contact Metropolitan Music in Vermont, Bobby Juzek might be able to remember these numbers or look at an old catalog.

Mine is fully carved with a Juzek "Master Art" label.

According to Adam Juzek at Metropolitan, "That's the Metropolitan Music Co. model #. Juzek basses are, and always have been made by Wilfer."

Ken-
There's a guy in town who has a hybrid Juzek. Don't know how old but it has some age on it. My first DB was a ply Juzek(Lang). Was curious if you knew anything about the carved Langs. There's a 5er on the board here FS and another - in violin form - at the Contrabasse shop in London. The builder is listed in my Elgar book as a contemporary of Krahmer who made good carved basses and many plywoods(Juzek, of course, probably others). Have you seen or played any of his carved basses?

Ike
