johnny 5

fun project. i had an old ply body and a neck from a trashed ply. did the neck set and said now what? well, ive never converted a bass (3 to 4, much less 4 to 5) and ive never made an extension, so...
the extension, nut, tailpiece, and fingerboard are beech cause thats all i had laying around. the f.b. is 3 octave, and the fifth string is a high c. lots of finishing up to do, but heres johnny 5. Paul, let me know if your interestd in trading!

Looks nice

That's intriguing- did you build everything? also, what's the mysterious black line on the extension?

i made the f.b. and extension. that black line is a file thats doubling as a nut for now. the tailpiece is just rough off the band saw and the string holes, as you can see, were not laid out, just drilled. a better one is in the works, the bridge was one i grabbed out of the fire box that happened to fit well enough and have enough meat above the heart.i just couldnt wait to see if it worked!

Bigger or reinforced bassbar was my first thought. Maybe even a bigger diameter soundpost to distribute the pressure? I dunno... I have no idea what I'm talking about. LOL.

I do like the fingerboard tho. Now you just need to dye it black and noone will know the diff

i agonized over this during my drive home and rationalized it like this: while the extra string does add to the overall pressure on the top, it disproportionaly adds pressure to the treble side, which is supported by a well fit, properly placed sound post, so i think ill be alright. i do feel like a huge ass for not considering what the added tension will do to the top, as my main concern was for the straightness of the neck. i guess only time will tell. thanks though for giving me something to think about...

I know of a few people that have done DIY 4 to 5 string conversions and theyve never had any problems.

Besides, theres not a lot of difference in tension if you start with 4 spiro mittels for example, then switch to a 5 set of spiro weichs + a high C. About ~30 pounds extra?

I'll pass for now, Kurt. (unless your wife looks damn good, and no, I won't "do it in the road".....although........).

Hey, I think it's cool. Very creative way to experiment and practice some different techniques on a bass that may have been doomed. Basses with this set up are becoming more common now.
I wouldn't think you'd have too many issues with the extra string pressure, being a laminate. My Bohmann does have some pretty important internal reinforcement wood strips in the top plate, but it is carved with fairly thin arching for a fiver.
A standard SP should be fine. String choices are all about the sound and feel the player likes. Again, no biggy. My Bohmann was made in 1888 with five guts in mind. I use Thomastik Orchestras all the way down to the low B and never had a problem in over 30 years. I may move to Starks now that I'm dropping the amp on some gigs.

I hate to ask this final, possibly, ugly question.....Howz it sound?.

I like the light colored fingerboard and tailpiece. I'd just seal it with Watco and leave it as is.

it could sound better, but it could sound worse as well. its got a nice growl on the E and A, nice and mellow in the mids, but a little brash and tight with the highs. ive got some dialing in to do, so hopes are high. if i had access to some decent recording gear id post some clips, but i dont...

You should string it B-G so the extension goes down to a G. Not useful at all but novel...

Lightbulb

Speaking of "indecent" I'd darken up the light wood, at least a bit. Especially the extension.

It looks like a marital aid, as is.

That would work along with some of this, and the colors are coordinated.......
