Josef Teller bridge

Hi all,

Not sure if this the right forum for this or if I should post
in the setup forum. Sorry if i'm in the wrong place...

Has anyone heard of Josef Teller Bridges?
http://www.teller.de/teller_en/index.html

How do they compare to Despiau bridges?

I'm looking for an adjustable bridge and I couldn't find any
Despiau bridge with preinstalled adjusters on, so I came up
with Josef Teller where some models have adjusters on.

It's either this, or have my luthier cut a Despiau bridge and put the
adjusters on.

I would like your opinion on the subject.

thanx in advance

Giannis

Teller bridge

I bought a Teller adgustable bridge from DICKS and it works perfectly to my bass. The Aubert and the Despiau are made from better wood, flamed and hardened. The Teller gives a resonant sound and although the adjusters tend to darken the sound my Teller has almost no darkening effect to my bass.
As for fitting adjusters yesterday i finished my first attempt, fitting aluminium afjusters to my old Despiau bridge. The sound is definitely warmer and darker, but the flexibility is worth it.

Greetings to Larisa from Crete

What kind of quality was the Teller bridge compared to the Despiau?

I'm thinking of buying from DICKS as well since my luthier buys
material from there.

Does it worth the effort of putting adjusters on a new
Despiau, or should I look for a new Teller with adjusters on?

regards,

Giannis

Giannis, the Teller is same quality to the Despiau as far as it coscerns grain and flame. The sound tends to be warmer in the Teller. If you put adjusters in the Despiau the final result will be a darker sound, so in my humble opinion buy the adjustable Teller and save all the fuss about it.

These are rather sweeping tonal generalizations. Please explain your methodology and reasons for your opinions.

Dear friends, my humble opinion in adjustable bridges is derived after only three succesful attempts in fitting adjusters ,all of them during last week. I followed strictly Chuck Traeger's methodology. The adjustable bridges produced a slightly warmer, darker sound, which suited me perfectly. I fitted an Aubert, a Despieau and a Bausch bridge, all of them with the same effect.
When in the past i sent three of my bridges in a luthier in Athens, i experienced again a darkening in the sound (actually in two of them the outcome was unpleasant to my ear).
This is the small experience i have in the subject. I believe that the adjusters tend to diversify the sound transfer along the bridge, hindering the vertical vibrations a bit. Hence the darker sound, which comes as a slightly muffling effect.
With due respect I'm all ears to hear suggestions and ideas from people like Arnold, Bob or Ken, who have spent a lifetime working with our beloved double basses.
Thanks in advance.
Michael
