Talking Just bought my first bass!!

its a kay S5 from 1937, and I couldnt be more pleased with my new baby. When I first saw it I didnt know what to think about the thin body but dont let it fool you this bass gets plenty of volume and more important, plenty of bottom end...

Congrats on your new bass! Great shape for an old Kay. Did it come with the pickup and quiver? Enjoy!

I have a double bass on my extended GAS list... Have only played one a handful of times since I first learned bass back in middle school. Highschool I switched to electric bass... Congratulations!

For what forester said. Get a stand and use it.
What kind of strings do you have there?

Thanks! No worries it has a very safe corner,
the chair was for picture purposes only.

Those are some ragged old strings that were on there when I got it, but I just replaced them with D’Addario Orchestra strings (I really only play jazz but I like the tension). They sound great, I was suprised how much it opened up the sound.

Strings

Yes, the right strings can make a so-so bass really come alive. There is no way of knowing which strings would be best until you put them on and play them. But of course to do that you have to buy them, which would be a very expensive proposition indeed.
I have a soft spot for Kays, having played several in the military. Never played a thinline though. You have the same quiver that I use, but I don't have a pickup. It seems those of my generation shy away from amplifying uprights. Of course you need to if you are on a stage with three guitars running amplifiers, but then we shy away from doing that too.
Good luck. Your ax looks like a beauty.
