Same here. Arnold's right in there, too, and probably you too, from a player's standpoint.

I don't know Ken, but I'm impressed with his encyclopedic knowledge of the double bass. Props to Ken!

Ken, at what edge did you become immersed in the double bass?

If that's the case, I can heartily recommend this. Not to diminish Ken's knowledge or contribution to our community, which I do appreciate.

I pulled out my Brun book last night after seeing this post/link and read thru from the English tunings on thru its progression from 3 to 4 string and why as well as all their experimental tunings. It seems that 5ths have been tried and failed over and over again.

I have tuned down many times to a D, Eb and even C when needed on a regular 4 string but as the book says, confuses the fingerings a bit depending. Also, the sound of the detuned string is usually weaker.

After trying just about everything I have concluded that in my world, the Chromatic Extension is the best overall as you can set your E string to any note between E and C and the speaking length of each note is increased to maintain the tension and volume of the note.

As far as history goes either you experience it by seeing old things/people first hand, read about it or make the history yourself and live long enough for someone to notice.

I was reading thru the book and thinking while trying the 5ths/4ths tuning as well (C/G/D/G) and realized that I should have started this when I was 20 and not 50. Wait.. I did start when I was 20 or even less..lol.. Forgot about that.. It's been so long..lol
