Just saw Dave Holland last night and...

Saw a wonderful performance by the Dave Holland Quintet in Indianapolis last night and was suprised/delighted to see Dave playing a Czech-Ease! He had it set up pretty much the exact same from what I've seen his setup in the past. Underwood and a mic between the feet of the bridge. Still sounded wonderful. Huge full sound. Great low end. Spoke really well up high. I suppose the rigors of carrying a highly valuable double bass on airplanes might have taken it's toll. He did mention they'd had a few rough traveling days.

What do you mean by "rough traveling days?" Not meaning to go off topic, but traveling has been a hot issue lately, with all the airline problems..

He didn't say exactly at the performance, but I'm assuming it's more of the same issues that we've all heard/experienced. Suffice it to say, the Czech-Ease practically looks like it could fit in an overhead bin with as small as it gets when it's in its case (almost).

Whats your opinion on the gig?? Not Dave Holland or any of the performers personally, but the band in general?

Saw him last night. Awesome as usual. I've seen that band a bunch of times and it gets better every time I see them.

While his tone was still good the Czech Ease does not compare to the real thing. I've always felt he had one of the best live tones out there. There were times last night where it was tricky to hear some of his articulation. I've seen him in this same venue several times and never had that problem before. Still good though.

I personally thought it was a great show. The first set was better than the second, but I suppose that happens. Part of me thinks that it might have been a bit of a warm-up for the tenure at the Showcase, but if it was, it was one of the best warm-ups I've ever heard.

I too have seen the band a number of times, as well as the big band. I definitely think they are one of the hardest working bands in jazz for a reason. I know a few people that get kind of dark about everything being in odd/mixed meters, or the lack of always playing changes, but I think what they do works really well and that they execute it wonderfully.

What was your opinion?

I really digged to show.. I was there for the 2nd set only though. Althought I can appreciate his musicianship, Nate Smith was a bit too much for me by the end of the set. I liked his playing and ability but it was just a little too over done for my taste.

I personally liked the mixed meter stuff they did and the "go with the flow" type jazz..

Dave's bass

Hi all,

I was also at the show on Monday. I was blown away by both sets of the performance! I thought the band was amazing. I thought Dave sounded great on that bass. My friend took a picture of the bridge. It looks like he has an underwood, realist, and a mic. I'm not sure which pickup he was using at the show though.

That's the same setup he's used for a while, minus the Realist. I think the Realist comes on the Czech-Ease and he probably just hadn't taken it off yet. But he's combined the Underwood and the AKG into a GK MB150 and a 4-10 cabinet.
