Talking Kay-Engelhardt

I'm looking at an Engelhardt ES9 and I'm wondering what the difference is between the Engelhardt and the old Kay S9. Everytrhing I read seeems to say they are virtually the same instrument with exception to tuning keys and neck radius that has changed since Engelhardt bought the bass/cello divison of Kay at auction. The thing is The S9 seems to have better tone and overall sound. At least on the ones I've heard. Is that all in the setup?????? Anyone know??????

Kays had a thin lacquer finish which was not-so-durable but let the sound out. Engelhardts are encapsulated in thick polyester or some such stuff, which is very durable but shuts down the sound. Otherwise, the construction is nearly identical.
