Question Kay M1 Tailgut nylon tail wire problem

I have a Kay M1. The Kay type ebonized tailpiece has holes through the front face of the tailpiece for the tail wire, or so I thought. I purchased a traditional 19.5 inch one with stops but as I discovered this does not appear to be correct. Anyone know what is used for tailpieces with this type of tailpiece/tail wire mounting configuration?

Is there some other part I need to utilize a traditional nylon tailpiece wire or do I need something else entirely? I realize I can purchase a new tailpiece with horizontal tail wire holes. I was just trying to stick with the original not to mention keep from buying a new tailpiece.

You need something else entirely.

Stainless steel cable with special clamps and lightweight aramid fibre rope are the two most common ways to suspend the tailpiece.

Many of our TalkBass sponsor/advertisers carry one or both of these.

Jake: Please go to this link at Lemur Music. Is this what you are referring to?

Exactly.

That or this high tech cord sold by Upton Bass and Mike Pecanic Music....maybe others too, but I've seen these two.

I find the steel wire to be easier to use when tuning the afterlength to a specific note, but that could be because I don't have enough knowledge of knots.

Not a Boy Scout, I'm afraid.

Thanks Mike, that's great!

By the way, when I click on the "Visit mpm's homepage" button in your drop-down menu I get a dead link. Did you forget to update your profile?

I play a King upright and my luthier pulled the old nylon cable and switched it out for a metal one with allen set screws to tighten it up and it works great! He mentioned to me that sometimes the little barrel screws on nylon cables can strip and leave you in a pickle! Just my 2 cents.
