kay s-51 fingerboard

so the shop just got a nice chubby jackson s-51 #10176, and its the first ive seen. the fingerboard over hangs by roughly 5mm on either side of the neck. was this how kay did the fivers, just put an extra wide board on a four string neck? the peg box hasnt been bushed, so i assume its originial to the bass. ive done alittle searching and found a suprisingly small amount of info on them (s-51). and yes i already checked rodger stowers kay page. thanks, kurt

Yes - My Kay 5 string has the overhanging fingerboard and I've seen a few others that were the same, so I assume they were all like that. I'd be curious to know if there are any Kay fivers that don't have the overhanging board.

That's how they did it Kurt - pretty hokey really. No stiffer necks, no thicker tops and stronger bass bars.

whats odd to me though is that the ffs are slightly futher apart (155mm) than i recall the fours being. why make this small adjustment to the body and leave out the neck widening?

Exclamation

To my knowledge the maker of my 1888 carved bass was the first person to do that on my fiver....the only existing one.
A low B. Joseph Bohmann.
See it here.....mouse on my name then click on the pop-out. (Bohmann 5 string).

Edit: You can kinda see where my left hand fingers are holding on to the edges where the board extends over the side of the neck in that one shot.
Most original fivers had real bulky necks to accomodate all five strings. This idea kept a slimmer neck profile. My bass' neck is as slim as any bass I've ever played.
