It's not like there are only 20 makers out there.. there were 1000s.. If they were busy making Violins, then many of the cruder looking Basses were made by the apprentice, sons or in a different shop following the influience of the main school of that town to compete..
Kenny, Kenny...you're avoiding my question...where do you find out about these old Mothers? I mean the big $$ ones?
Also, are there any pictures? I know that fine Japanese player and collector is out there, scouting around for them too.

Cool Ah Haaaa..

Thru the Grape Vine my friend.. When you play in Orchestras, you meet other Bassists and share with them what they shared with others.. Also, I am in touch with several dealers throughtout the world. I like to window shop.. The fact that I bought two Italian Basses and one English Bass from dealers within the last year or so, gives me some clout with them and the others that see my potential. This opens door.. Wide ones.....lol

Cool ??

DZ, you just confused me.. Please clarify your post and what you want to hear from me..

My Basses are not crap and I am referring to what I hear not see.. Then I might go looking. I have seen only 2 nice old Basses in the Orch I play in. One Italian and one German.. I would not own either one of them for various reasons. Maybe, just maybe my old Mystery Bass will be the "holy grail" for me when it's all done and settled in..

When people hear I am shopping, mouths start moving. Everyone enjoys talking Bass and especially dropping names.. Well, most everybody that is..

For Paul

Have you seen this site Paul; I haven't found anything else online though that isn't in the "circle" of sites with basses on them. "So you want to make a double bass" by Peter Chandler has pictures of some of the basses [Busan, Gofriller, Amati ect] that he took those plans he sells from, but at $65 the book is ok but..............

p.s. Aaron Noguer makes no claim to the validity of any bass he post or links to, so if it an't real it an't my fault, dig.

58"? That thing is HUGE. I'd need a foot stool to play it, I think.

Cool Size..

i think the measurement is 48" and not 58". The string length could not be 41.5" in proportion. It would have to be 51.5".. Look closely at the body.. That also looks a little like my old italian Bass. I have some old pics i will scan so you can see the similarities..
