Ken Smith Likes It . . . .

He is top bidder on this Italian bass on eBay . . . 150 years old. Sure looks nice, what's the deal Ken ?

I am a sucker for a well shaped corner.

Another favorite (not from eBay) and actually very old:

Yeah, the upper ribs show signs of "belt buckle" wear/scratches on both the right and left sides ...hhmmm

Most likely fake from Hungary or Czech republic.
Probably good sounding.

Yes. I almost bought a pretty expensive bass in Prague. It was a damn good copy of an old italian bass...

Good catch! That seems like a smoking gun to me. So they really do go to the trouble of making the pegbox look as if the tuners have been changed? Amazing!

I really like the look of it and would be happy to pay 1000 GB Pounds for it...

But I would have thought the 500 GB Pounds shipping costs from Germany to USA, would have put US bidders off.....

That's half as much again!

Were old basses made w/ Italian poplar? Thought that was a modern wood.

same seller, prolly same maker/varnisher:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...tem=7413544283

It's too bad they list these things as being 150 years old. That's total jive and a disservice. What's wrong with "nice modern instrument, antiqued varnish"?

Perhaps someone who can argue the case properly (certainly not me) should contact ebay. It is, after all, our brethren who are getting taken for a ride.

Interesting bass, might be, might not be. However, if your bass was being advertised on an Ebay auction as 150 year old instrument, I'd say bubbermesier.

Clearly this shows that the same old "master" played all of these instruments 150 years ago. He had a habit of scratching the tip of the bow in the same place. Now, I have for sale some swamp land...

I was interested in this bass as it seems to be roughly within my price range and a good "step up" from what I have...looks like it's going for about £3k..?

I emailed with some questions and got this reply on its age :

"Dear Sir, sorry but we don't have any evidence that the bass is 150 years old. This is only our opinion about this instrument. It looks realy old and sounds very lovely. It is hard to date an instrument like this. The Bass has a neck-graft. The wood and the varnish looks very old and used. It smells old. It it was often used. Best Regards, F.Szoradi "

Yeah I'd just be looking to play one of these things!! From discussions elsewhere and this thread/auction - it seems the retailers in Germany are going to be the best place for me to get my next DB!

A good excuse - as if I needed one - for a nice holiday in Deutschland!!
