Knilling now.....or Shen later?

Ive got a couple basses that have popped up lately in my area and Ive kinda narrowed it down to two. The first is a Shen 80. guy says its in great condition, comes with a bag, stand and a cheap pickup. Lowest I can get him is $1100. Id have to save a little more money but it wouldnt take long.

Just yesterday a Knilling Bucharest showed up for $800 although hes quick to sell so I could probably get it for 7ish. He doesnt seem to know much about it other than its 6 foot tall. I tried looking up some info but its kinda scarce but what Ive seen, the Bucharest sells used for $1800. Is this a pretty good bass and this guy just doesnt know what hes selling? And just to clarify, this is my first DB and Im not looking to start playing in the symphony, just some rockabilly/jazz type stuff.

And I know, I should go play them both but, Im looking for first impressions for you guys in the know. The Shen will probably win out cuz I know you guys love Shens. So Im really looking for opinions on the Knilling.

Check here, for example. Do a search within the Basses forum on "knilling." There are several threads that seem relevant. $1800 for a used Knilling ply bass? I think that would be overpriced. It may be a fine deal around $700 but don't base that price on a "market value" of $1800. I'd suggest taking along an experienced player to help you to evaluate it.

What is your budget? I suggest that you start there and buy the very best bass you can within that budget. I'll ask the perennial question. Do you have a teacher?
