Laurel bass info?

Anybody have any info on Laurel basses?

My favorite instrument shop, Elderly, has one. It seems like a really good instrument. Here's a link to it:

Seems like a lot of money for a Chinese plywood bass to me.

YMMV

The older Lewis and Son Laurel basses were made in Germany and are very well constructed instruments. If this is one of those, and has no major issues, the price might not be unreasonable.

"Burned on" purfling and a faux flame neck for $2500? And I can't imagine this bass will sound even half as good as your Swingmaster.

I should have checked out the link. It does not look like one of the old German ones. Or does it?

If that purfling is "burned on" its pretty clever.

I'm with you on that aspect Matthew. In the pix it sure looks as though you can see shrinkage highlights on the purfled 'shield'.

In that photo its hard to tell if that's an older cracked finish or just orange peel in the polyurethane!

We need to see the label..........

That looks like checking in the finish, not orange peel. Not that that means much, but my auto enthusiast sense knows orange peel.

A Chinese plywood bass, burned-on purfling, purchased from a non-specialty shop with no expectation of a high-quality setup, for $2500. Let's see...hmmm...

NO!

Man, you're talking the kind of $$$ that can get you into a nice hybrid. Hey, but if you play it and you fall in love...

I own a Laurel Laminate 3/4 - according to the sticker, it was made in Germany for Wm. Lewis & Co. of Chicago - s/n 13884 - and I'd like to find out just how old it is; I bought it from a symphony artist in Lubbock TX who bought it new in the '80s. I've seen an ad for s/n 0047 indicating circa 1965, and there's one in Elderly's listing showing s/n 232 but no date. Any ideas?

It looks like "burned-on" curly maple. The fancy figure in the neck wood does not carry through to the peg box.

I too have a German made Laurel. It is my first upright, and I just got it two weeks ago.

It is number 231. I paid a good deal less than the one starting this thread.

"LAUREL 3/4 BASS
EC, attractive amber finish, all laminate construction, spruce top, maple back and sides, ebony fingerboard and tailpiece, quality tuners, burned on purfling (top and back), nice instrument, 1-13/16" nut, 42" scale, with nice heavy gigbag, on consignment, Price Reduced (SN:232)
110U-5058 .. $2,100.00"

Interestingly that's the next one out of the factory after mine if (SN:232) stands for the serial number.

Here is number 47

William Lewis & Son larual bass number 232

I purchased a larual bass number 232. The number 232 is not a S/N (serial number) it is a model number. The number 231 was made in 1980.

see link.
