bassesonline.com

You may want to consider the Roma or the Eberle at www.bassesonline.com

A lot of bass for the buck.

Cheers,

Paul

if you take time to look through the noob links, the topic is most definitely covered. Your going to have a hard time finding anything thats useful at this price though.

Also, what type of music do you plan to play on it. It matters.

This is covered to death in the newb links. I know because I rummaged through them a couple years ago when i was shopping for a bass. This exact same question has been asked a few times a month by individual people for several months running as well.

At any rate, I haven't been able to find a more reliably good sounding and quality built bass at the $1k mark than the Engelhardt EM-1. You still will end up paying an extra $200 for new strings and a good setup though. You cannot get around this if you are buying a new bass online. Unless you run across a generous or desperate person, you aren't gonna get a decent bass with a useable setup for under $1200, case closed.

Mods- could you add a specific topic in the newbie links area that says "what is a good bass I can get for $1k?" Maybe merge some of the recent threads or something? I don't know if people are getting lazy or if I'm just imagining some links exist that don't.

Yep. Recently I made an exhaustive trip through the noob links before buying my first DB. Lot of good stuff in there.

Good luck, LesClaypoolJR

You need to be aware, above all, that you need to modify your thinking a little for DB. There is little about this instrument that is so cut and dried that someone can tell you what's "good" or "bad", since the instruments themselves are as much individuals as the players. You have to work to find what's right for YOU, which can only be done with trial-n-error sometimes.
