looking for upright bass lessons in Nashville

Hi all,
I'm an electric player who has begun playing upright, and in dire need of some guidance. Anyone know of someone in the Nashville area who would be good for teaching technique, etc.? My bass could also use a setup; the action is pretty high. Any luthier recommendations in the area?

Thanks, yo's.

Check in with Jim Ferguson, if he's not teaching he may be able to recommend someone. He is an EXCELLENT player and a great person. I think his website is www.jimfergusonmusic.com...

You might also try Roger Spencer at Nashville Jazz Workshop for lessons. As far as setup, try Dustin Williams at Williams Fine Violins.

thanks,
Roger

Jim got right back to me. Seems like a quality guy...I'm excited to meet him! Pleasant surprise to hear him play and sing on thetalkbasses.com!

You're sure right about Jim being a "quality guy"! But, then again, so are Roger and Ike. Ya can't really go wrong.

Just don't get too good on that upright too fast...I'm already a little short on work!

Welcome to the world of Double Bass...

You won't be disappointed. I had a lengthy lesson with Jim a couple of years ago and I am still exploring some of the things he showed me. And as several folks have noted, he is a super nice guy.

If you can't work it out with the folks mentioned, Jeremy Darrow posts here on occasion and gives lessons through Dustin Williams' shop.

Thanks Brad! Where/when/how often do you play in Nashville?

I play a lot of honky-tonk gigs on lower Broadway. Mostly a mix of slab and DB. The working conditions are miserable but a least the pay sucks! Also the occasional odd session, orch. pit gigs and such. I play DB for a singer named Mandy Barnett and just finished a run of Always, Patsy Cline with her at The Ryman. But, alas, most nights you'll find me sweatin' it out at Robert's, The Wheel, 2nd Fiddle, etc.
