looking for a Upton hybrid to try/listen to

I'm looking for a hybrid hawkes somewhere around the Elk River MN. area that I'd be able to try or just hear. I'd hate to buy a bass blindly off the net.
Thanks in advance.

i'm in central pa, so trying mine would involve a trip. i went through a similar hesitation before ordering mine, but communicated with folks who owned them and they universally loved them. i've had mine for, what, a couple of weeks. other than the action being set a bit high for my taste, the set up was fab (i did get the bridge adjusters). absolutely no mystery buzzes or rattles or anything like that, just rich sound that keeps opening up as it's played. someone in one of the forums here suggested long, deep bowed notes to open up a new bass, and it seems to me doing the magic. it sounds equal to or better than basses i've tried that are in the 4500-7000 price range, which makes it really is a fabulous value. the hybrid is also quite beautiful, and has found a home in the corner of our living room. i'm still waiting for the mooradian case i ordered with it, then it goes out for some gigs.

a couple of suggestions: be very specific about your playing style, so they can setup your instrument to your specs ... i was a bit too ... vague, i think when i spec'ed mine. secondly, i get the distinct impression that the folks at upton are a tad overwelmed by their success right now and are juggling lots of demand with delivery schedules and a desire to start making everything in the states ... all without sacrificing quality. there is nothing about my instrument that indicates any shortcuts, but i do believe if you communicate with everyone there, not necessary nag, but make your presence known, you'll end up with an instrument you'll be happy with.

feel free to email off list for more.

Jeff--

You mentioned that the string height (we don't say "action" in the DB world ) is a bit high and that you have adjusters. So, unless I missed something, the solution ought to be simple. Yes?

Jeff,

If you want we can take a kerf out of the bridge leg to completely fix your issue giving you an extra -1/8" ish. I would just need your bridge back. In and out in less than an hour, just shipping to consider.

Don't worry we are busy yes, very busy, but will never sacrifice quality...even if I have to give a longer wait time.

Thanks

gary,

offer is appreciated. the adjusters are bottomed out, but i'm happy with where things are at, at the moment ... can i take a rain check on the offer? i did put a set of kolstein heritages and, boy, is she sounding sweet. i just want things to settle in before i make any big changes.

i'm sure you understand.

Jeff,

Anytime you want it done just let me know. Get use to her first and see where you and the the bass settle. You never know, you may want to start bringing the "action" up before you know it...

someguy,
I just got my Hawkes in May. I live in Mound, west of Minnetonka. Give me a holler and you can come down and try her out. I mean IM me. Is that the jargon.

You may catch a little flack from the mods and get moved to the "for sale" section but maybe she will sell before then
