Luthier charges......

Hi all. I know that this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions, but any opinions would be useful all the same. I'm currently looking for a cheap-ish bass (i.e. under 1500 euro) and I spoke to a luthier last night about my quest. He told me that I wouldn't get anything for that money, and that even if I had the cheapest laminate, he'd still charge another 800-1000 euro to set it up properly.

From what I've read here, most people seem to pay 2-300 euro / dollars for setup and it seems to me that the amount I was quoted is a bit excessive, especially when I can get a reasonable bass (Strunal/Christopher) from the likes of Thomann which should be pretty well set up already.

But since I don't know too much about DBs, I'd be interested in any opinions....

Thanks

Appropriate level of setup

It isn't appropriate to be doing enough work on an entry level bass to bill as a standard setup an astonishing 800-1000 euros. This particular luthier is completely out of touch with reality. Find another guy.

He just doesn't want to work on that bass.

I have a ply bass that need a neck re-set and few years back. I had someone quote me $1500 (probably the current value of the bass) and another tell me I should get rid of it a buy a new bass. I found someone who did a great job at a price that seemed fair. Look around.
