Paul-- I assume this was your answer embedded above:

Thomastik Orchestra strings. I play as much as I can; sometimes four hrs. a day, and other days; nothing! Check my bass out in the Talkbass, Version 2, Eye Candy.
I'm 64, playing a 7/8 five string (low B ) Joseph Bohmann DB

Thanks-- er.. but I wanted to know the particulars from agarfield2004. It bears mentioning that you have one beautiful bass!

Blisters hurting? To me, that's little stuff. When I returned to playing the DB, the impinged tendon in my left shoulder I'd been nursing for years preventing me from playing. I'd play for an hour and my arm would be numb and I'd be out of commission for three days. I marched right to the surgeons office and signed up for acromioplasty. I did the physical therapy lying on the floor looking up at the bass. Months later, I was back! Ah, what we do for our great love!

Sorry DRUB, I misread your post. When you said "the over forty club" I did'nt bother reading the upper part where you were addressing agarfield...although i'm not denying that i'll do anything to get people to look at my baby!

Though the blisters are no fun, sometimes the callouses can be entertaining. I used to amaze my kids by "balancing" a toothpick vertically on my finger (they didn't know that I'd simply stuck the pointy end into a callous).

When I was about 17 and playing classical music for hours each day, I visited the doctor's office. The nurse needed a small blood sample and attempted to prick one of the fingers on my left hand with a lancet. It went in but no blood came out! I explained why. There were hardly any callouses visible-- the skin had become toughened.

Yep! Me and A bassist friend of mine, used to stand at the bar during a break and hold a cigarette, lit end on each of our plucking fingers to see who would be first throw the cig down, after the heat finally burned through and heated up the raw meat underneath!
