Moving bass to Calif from Ga

I am moving to Calif and trying to decide whether or not to rent a van to take my bass or buy a hard case and fly. Any ideas or input?

With the prices of gas these days its just about cheaper to rent the case for $100 and pay the $130 in fees, assuming you get a decent price on your ticket.

Is there a place that you can rent a hard case?

I have done East/West moves several times. I drove once. If you have the time, your bass will get there safe and sound, but you won't save money (hotels, gas etc...). There are also hidden dangers such as sun, cold and heat in the back seat. Not a big deal, but it pays to be mindful.

I also had my bass crated and sent. Bad move. No significant damage, but temperature and jostling weren't friendly to the soundpost and seams.

Flying? Probably the most hassle, but actually a cheaper alternative at least for me. You can also call a shop and see if they can help you ship. Depending on your arrangments for renting the case, you may need someone on both ends with a car that can fit the case. No VW bugs or cabs.

Train? I have done long East coast trips where I travelled in a sleeper car with the bass. VERY long trips and not super cheap. However, it is very low hassle and you meet some interesting people. I read three novels on one such trip about 9 years ago.
