The All Strings Attached service aspect is interesting. I think there is a bit of a culture gap, since I believe the owner and his wife are 1st generation americans from one of the old soviet block countries. You probably dealt with their son, Roman, who is easier to deal with, but still carries some of the odd social norms not really accepted in the american marketplace. They definetely come off a little rough, especially when you are looking to put serious money into their business, but they are good people and mean well.

Good luck with your search!

agreed.

yeah, thats pretty much what i made of it as well. i believe his name is vladimir? he approached my girlfriend asking her all these questions about my friend and i, as if there was something wrong with us based on appearance. oh well. roman was overall pretty receptive, but hard to talk to, maybe because the extent of his knowledge made it a little harder to make answers to my probably extremely vague questions quick and consise. you can tell there's a strong classical background in that shop, and im not necessarily criticizing their character, i just need to be sure of where im putting my money, as far as into what instrument, and into what people i guess. maybe it would be easier to spend this money on a bass if the luthier/salesman/etc. etc. etc. knew exactly where i was coming from. they definitely had some decent basses in there on the other hand, just a tad out of my price range. a lot were in the 10k range (yeesh!).

Just an observation...

Anyone notice that the two laminates and the one hybrid at http://www.thedoublebassworkshop.com...ries.php?id=13 look strikingly similar in proportion and price to the the two laminates and the one hybrid offered by Upton?

Sourced from the same builder?
