My first DB ????

What are your thoughts? this will be my first DB, don't won't to spend more than 2 thousand. The Upton Laminated Double Bass HAWKES, or the Engelhardt ES-1 Supreme Bass. Playing Jazz, maybe some Bluegrass. More Jazz though. And what are your thoughts on Upton. Good , Bad ( to deal with). Any info you guys can give a new guy to the DB seen. I've played Electric Bass for 25 years. but just now getting into this side.
Thanks for any help

Upon is awesome, period. I have a Hybrid Hawkes coming in a few weeks and they have been tottally first class all the way. Everyone here on TB will likely agree from what I have heard.

I've owned an Engle the last year and a half, and I would really advise starting on the Upton instead. It seems to be a better bass all around from what I know, and the Engle neck may give you problems becasue the neck is so thin.

+1, ditto, I agree, precisely! The Upton is head and shoulders (and neck) above the Engle.

You can't find a shop better than Upton...they will treat you right.

BTW, Upton also sells the ES-1.

the upton guys are awesome....but can you scrimp and save another grand for the hybrid? I don't think you'll be sorry in the long run. It really is the bargain of that shop, and from what I've heard theyve been improving it on a regular bassis.

Indeed. As I've mentioned here before, if you saved and ended up with the hybrid, I think you would NEVER regret it. Now, the ply is a fine deal but, oh, that hybrid!

The folks at Upton Bass are indeed great to deal with. If possible, save up and get the Hawkes Hybrid model. You won't be sorry you did. I got one recently as a 2nd bass, and I like it more all the time. It's also a real bargain IMO.

I received my Upton laminated db two weeks ago -- strung with Dominants -- and I can't stop playing! The staff are great and their service is top shelf.

Those Upton guys are first rate. When I think that I paid only as much for the Hawkes as I have for a 'merely decent', mid-level acoustic guitar, I'm amazed.
