My first upright(gear snobs beware)

Heres my new upright bass. Im not done and I need to add sound holes. It sounds pretty nice for a ghetto upright. Once I get new strings and put in an f hole I should be golden. I also plan to spray paint it and seal the top on better. Ill make some and sell em for $50 if anyone is interested lol.

Materials:
cheap neck
Cheap fender style bridge
Storage box
Paddle fan blades
Bike kick stand

Well, I can't say you didn't warn me. Doesn't this belong with the EUBs? You get a lot of points for creativity. And 1 for moxy, too.

Can you take the top off so you can store your extra stuff in it? Strings, music, change of outfits, etc.?

Yeah but it doesnt seal to good so the bass tends to fall apart while Im playing. Maybe I can find a way to make it so i can get a solid seal but still use it as storage. Maybe I can store small children in it while I play an they can peek through the sound hole ill be putting in.

Im not sure how to explain it. Its not horrible. I was actually kinda surprised. Its not as good as that cardboard one thats been floating around youtube. Maybe like a cheap acoustic guitar but the bass version. Maybe tomorrow Ill put the sound hole in and Ill record it. The strings on it are beyond dead and beyond boiling to restore. I might be able to grab some then aswell. Ill be swamped with clinical.

No doubt. There should be another area on TB for DIY Rubbermaid crap, and **** like that. To put this anywhere on the DB side is an insult.

Proud Snob.

Gotta have standards.

p.s. Just wait for Uncle Paul to notice those frets.

I'm pretty sure the hipsters at any local original music dive would consider that genius. Bass players....not so much.

Nice! That's pretty cool. I've got one of the cardboard basses, and I like it a lot, but there's nothing quite like an actual upright. Still, though, yours is awesome! Have fun, and if you like it, and have fun playing it ignore the snobs and do what you like!

You may wish to leave it unpainted - paint will detract from the acoustic property of the storage bin.

Is your storage bin made in China? Be aware that the rectangular bin creates vortexes in the corners that diffuse sound. You may wish to use a round storage receptacle instead:

Hey, that's pretty ingenious! I can't wait to hear what it sounds like. Here's a simple device you can whip up to practice your arco. Be sure to post a sound clip!

Great innovation Joey305. Paddle fan is great, add a pickup and maybe a second blade for rigidity and you have a wonderful bg. Love the kickstand idea.

Crap factor aside, it's not an upright at all, just a vertical electric. That's not snobbery, I would have loved to see an actual homemade "ghetto" upright, but the bridge and neck have to have SOME semblance of the real thing to count at all!
