And my bass has a Georges Apparut label. The label's a total fraud. This is news?

In the ancient German bass I recently sold, if you looked very hard through the f-hole, deeply embedded under glue, etc. was a label that said "Gasparo da Salo". No way, but good for a chuckle.

Cool Label

Don, Are your questioning the Juzek Label in that Bass or the Toenniges Label? Or are you just trying to have some fun on a slow day?

Cool Labels

I just bought an Italian Solo Bass labeled Raffael Guadagnini, Naples 1802. We know there was no such maker. But it IS early 19th century Neopolitan.

My old Italian Bass was labeled Giacomo Rivolta 1822. The strange thing is that the Bass was old in 1822. They must have put the label in to leave Europe during wwI or wwII and could not take the Bass if it was suspected to be a valuable treasure so they put a label in of less merit. Just a thought !

Adding or changing labels inside instruments (unfortunately) is not that unusual. Many years ago, I acquired most of the contents of a violin shop that went out of business when the owner died. Among the contents was a small box containing hundreds of violin labels. The labels were all printed (not photocopies) and/or signed in ink on very old paper or parchment. I would venture to say that this shop was not the only one with a box full of authentic looking labels in the back room.

With that said, I should add that anyone who buys an instrument solely on the basis of a particular label inside is a fool.

The Sirleto , makers of my fiddle, 'brand' their basses both on the button and inside. On the button it looks like a stamp, and on the inside it looks like the old branding-iron method.

The bass itself. . I don't remeber if Ken played the wilfer/whoever-the-other-guy-is bass but I did and was not impressed. To me it was a Juzek/wilfer in sound and construction. nothin' fancy- didn't sound bad but it didn't sound very good either.

That little Italian bass ken Bought Is like a Maserati- small and fast...
