Love the varnish! Did you request that special, or did it just come like that?

I asked for a deep, dark, varnish with a little warmth.

That's what I got.

Yes it is.

I don't have much experience with DB pickups, and it's only been used to push a Korg DTR-1 tuner (and works wonderfully for that).

I don't really play 'out', so I'm not even really qualified to review it. I typically don't like piezo pickups on their own. I record (home studio) and only use piezo's for a specific character that was missing from the mic signal(s). Sometimes a tad of attack, sometimes the subs, sometimes nuthin. I've got a collection of around 50 mics to choose from.

Anyone know if the 'spotting' in the varnish is normal on a new bass?

It's most easily seen in the bottom right of the first pic.
(or in the links to the more detailed photos)

I think that is just the grain of the wood. Upton has done something to accent the grain.

Looks like some nice bear claw on there. Post some clipperoos, eh?
And then, a few months down the road, post some more!
That's not asking too much, is it?

Just the way the wood took the linseed oil ground...and some refraction through the layers of varnish. It's cool to watch the basses when they start getting varnished, every piece takes the oil differently, and you can get some killer looking pieces!

Eric,
In furniture making, I've found that linseed oil can really pop the grain and give a lot of depth. Followed by several coats of rubbed shellac the wood really glows.
Your finishes are beautiful, but you've outdone yourself on this one.

Wow, that bass looks fantastic! If my on-order Upton Hawkes laminate looks anything like that, I will be very happy. Thanks for the pics.
