Cool My new Hungarian gypsy :)

I just upgraded from my Christopher to a 2005 Hungarian
bass. I dont have pictures yet, maybe in a day or two.

My 403 Christopher is now on consignment for a really
good price at Pete's Bass in Portland, if you live in the
area and are looking for an entry carved bass its like
3 years old (enough to give it some character) and
in primo condition.

The Hungarian has a dark aged look that i just love,
and in spite of being new it has a singing tone that
is just wonderful. Label inside says Benedek Elemer,
Budapest.

Cool Benedek Elemer?

Well at least your has a name. My Hungarian has no name, place or date anywhere. It's deep, smooth, powerful and HUGE.. Just doest sound as sweet as my Italian or English Basses. I do think they sound better than the commercial German Basses though and the cost is often lower. Mine wasn't put together too well and cost a small fortune to restore.

here; http://www.kensmithbasses.com/Double.../Hungarian.htm

and looked like this when I first got it; http://www.kensmithbasses.com/Double...2/Mystery2.htm

I would like to know who the actual maker is and about when it was made but we can only assume at this time.

Congrats

Good deal, Jack!

You're either too late or too early for me to consinder your Chrissie. Just bit on a blonde laminate Shen. But coming at it from playing pizz Jazz and a little Bluegrass/ pop.

But taking lessons including arco and Simandle. Who knows, a carved European bass might be in my future some day.

Trying to remember which bass was your new one at Pete's. Is it round back or flat?

It just gave it to him last night so you wouldnt have seen
it anyway

Its a round back, 3/4, with violin corners. Anyone that
was interested just ask Pete which bass is Jack's and
he'd show you.

When i got there yesterday he was just finishing a
lesson with a young girl maybe 11 or 12 years old. It
was really cool seeing someone female and that young
on the bass

The Hungarian is also a 3/4 btw, but the body seems
larger, fatter, and heavier than the Chrissy was. The
top has a huge 'bubble' or whatever you call that where
it rises to the bridge.

I'm at work, maybe tonight I can get a couple pictures
made

Wish i was closer I'd love to hear that bass. Mine has plate
tuners but Pete has already ordered ebony knob single
tuners for me and they should be in next week. I figured if
this was the bass I was gonna trick it out the way i wanted.

According to Pete the luthier in Budapest making these is
a brother of a guy living here in Portland, and he brings them
into the country. Hammond Ashley has reportedly bought one
or more at some point, dont know if they still have them or
not.

Cool luthier in Budapest making these...?

I assume you are referring to your Bass and not mine? We don't know the age of my Bass but it is not brand new. It has had the Top off a few times before me getting it. By who and where I have no clue. My Bass came out of Canada when I got it. The previous owner claims he got it 30 years ago and it looked the same as it did when I got it. I don't know how much of his story I believe.

I've been in Pete's when that student was there. I think she plays a 1/2 size. Also think its great that young girls would be interest in bass rather than flute or the traditional "girly" instruments. Although, Pete tells me her practice disipline is nil. I guess youth is wasted on the young. ;o}

I'm taking the Shen in tonight for some fingerboard work. I'll ask Pete which one you bought.

That's a beautiful bass, Ken. I'd love to see your stable some day.

Looks like it sprouted an extra tuning key, though. A little Miracle Grow and direct sunlight?
