My new Kay

Last Saturday, I just got my first upright. Thanks to all the people that I have met here and elsewhere for their time, helping me make an 'educated' buy.

It is a 1959 Kay S-1

It is strung with Thomastik-Infeld Spirocore, set up with low action as I like. Here it is:

Hey! That's not new, it's used. Seems the seller misled you.

Seriously, congrats! Looks great. It's a treat when you find a "bass love."

I should have said "new" to me

But since she is older than me..... does that make me new to her ?

Nice find Hotrod, it looks very original - I like that colour, too.

Hot -
Lucky you.
I had a 1950 S-1. A dynamite little bass (40.5 string length) that played loud and rich. I hope you enjoy yours.

Congrats HotRoded ... It's a beaut . I have a '64 S-1 with SS G & D and Spiro Weich A & E and it sure sounds good. The S-1 was the high-end Kay at the time with ebony FB and TP and real purfling. Enjoy your new old bass.

I'm familiar with the M-1 (my friend had one) and the C-1 (I had one for my first instrument), but not the S-1. How are they different? Either way, looks like a lovely bass!

I am not very knowledgeable, but the S-1 came with ebony fingerboard and tail piece, and real purfling on top, back and around the "f" holes (which is not necessarily an advantage on a plywood bass). That's all I know!

Thumbs up Nice!

Wow thats a nice looking Kay. Congrats! I love the color.

I also recently purchased my first DB. Its a 51' Kay M1 and I bought it from a fellow TB'r here in Phoenix just a month ago. I love it. Been playing EB for 20+ years and never new what I was missing.

Enjoy!
