My New Old French Bass

The check is in the… Fed Ex truck. I’ve just bought this beauty from String Emporium:
http://www.stringemporium.com/jaquet-gand-front-pop.htm
http://www.stringemporium.com/jaquet-gand-side-pop.htm
http://www.stringemporium.com/jacquet-gand-back-pop.htm
http://www.stringemporium.com/Jacque...scroll-pop.htm
http://www.stringemporium.com/jacque...f-hole-pop.htm
http://www.stringemporium.com/jaquet-gand-edges-pop.htm
Right out of the box, I was a bit disappointed. It hadn’t been played in a year. Later in the day, I brought it to a concert I was doing with Darla Coolman (Todd’s wife) in a chamber orchestra. She bowed the hell out of it and it really opened up.
Next some tweaking by Arnold Schnitzer on the soundpost, bridge, and tailpiece, and it got even bigger. Formerly a jazz bass, it’s set up with Flexocors; Arnold put a Spiro E on it. He played one note and we broke up. You could go out for coffee waiting for the sustain to stop.
The Flexocors have a quick decay, of course, but at home I began walking ‘If I Were a Bell’ changes and it started giving that punch and nasal howl that PC got.
I’m happy.
Steve Koscica made this transaction simple and easy. You’d never know that it took place between Arizona and New Jersey. Have no fear. It would be more of a hassle buying a bass in Manhattan, 30 minutes away. Steve shipped the bass in a flight case for me to try. It came with a return bill of lading filled out. So I’m sending him his flight case…empty. In between, we had a very friendly conversation about basses and bass people.
In case you think I’ve left the reservation, not so. Arnold Schnitzer got us together; otherwise, none of this would have happened. A class act.

Frickin' yummy. Well done, me lad.

Just goes to show you.... the only way to get what you really want for Christmas is to do the shopping yourself.

Thanks Don!

Thanks for filling in the details of how you got the bass. Glad all worked out so well for you. The bass I bought from Steve
worked out to be the best bass I have owned. He IS great to work with and is super reliable.

THat old thing? It's all beat up and scratched up. Who'd want that?!?!

Good to see a long distance transaction like that. Makes it even more inviting to try it. Congrats.

That bass was MINE! Dang.
Steve recommended that one to me back in February when I was looking to spend my bass repair money on another axe; he kept saying the repair to the neck wasn't quite finished yet, and eventually I went with something else. Then he called me a couple of months ago just to say "it's ready, would you still like to buy it?" and the timing just could not work.
From everything he said, it's a killer. Congrats, Don!

Congratulations Don ! Hope it plays as nice as it looks because it sure is nice looking. New and shiny just doesn't do it for me like a bass that's well broken in and has character. That bass is some serious eye candy. Enjoy !

Man that bass is clean. Those edges are amazing.

What are the dimensions?

Don,

Having dealt with both Arnold and Steve, I second the verdict that they are both first class guys! Congrtas on the bass.
