My new plywood toy - a shipping success!

Big box arrived this morning, great delivery job by Craters and Freighters of Philadelphia, via UPS. Beautifully packed on a pallet. Soundpost hadn't even fallen....

This was inside it... King Mortone #1114. Happy days...

More pictures here

Makes quite a nice family, if only for a few days (the S-9 is sold... sadly).

Oh, nearly forgot. It sounds awesome too... though not quite as big as the Kay M-2... at least not yet. Soundpost tweak needed I think, bit of a set up by a genius.

Hey Paul…awesome! I guess it is safe to say you recommend Craters & Freighters as a reliable shipper.

How is it you can get a bass half way around the world and I am working feverishly to get my flight case returned across the good ole USA?

Nice looking bass family…enjoy and thanks!

Thanks Molly, great tip on the Shippers!
Good luck with the case of the missing case....

By the way, if anyone is interested, shipping with full insurance, to my door, was less than $700. I think that's pretty good. The packing was excellent. Cardboard too, not even wood. Not necessary on a plane. By ship might've been different.
There were taxes and duty to pay on top mind.

Congrats! Looks great.

How often do you play each of the members of the family?

Are those Eurosonics on there? Were they your choice or is that what the bass shipped with? Have fun spanking that plank...

Haha, I was just about to do a search to ID those strings, but I suspected they were Eurosonics. I think you just confirmed for me. E/A are Eurosonics (if thats what they are), DG plain gut - that's how it arrived. I'll keep the guts on.

Never played Eurosonics before. Tone is nice and dark and full. Tension and weight a bit much to match the plain gut, I prefer lower tension (perhaps these are regular guage Eurosonics?).
Also the slap tone is a little harsh to match the guts ... but then most nylon strings are.

I've actually changed them for Innovation Supersilvers, which are a better match for tension and playability. They do sound a little brighter though, and also suffer from a slightly too pronounced click to really match the guts.

Long term will go for PsychoSlaps (horrid name) like I have on the Kay, tho I'm about to try out an Oliv E ... when it arrives from the states.... They may be an even better match.

SShhh... you're not allowed to ask that question!
Especially as being a Dad of young babies I have to limit gigging anyway.... Buying basses is my displacement activity. Gulp.

Anyway, for now the Kay M-2 is gigging bass, for folk-blues / Jump blues, and the one I pick up at home most. I play the B+H for rock and roll / jump-jive gigs, it has a more ... well, rock and roll set up!
The S-9 I've never gigged ... only rehearsals. In a way too precious, and personally I prefer the mojo and punchy lively sound of the battered old Kay to the S-9's pristine beauty and controlled clean tone. That's why I'm letting her go this weekend....

If set up gets the '37/8 King sounding as good as the '38 Kay, playing will be split equally between them. ANd I will continually remind myself, while it lasts, that I'm very lucky to have the choice.

One day there'll be school fees to pay.... or I'll lose my job. But for now, while people I know and love fight for their lives, I thought, f*** it, indulge yourself while you can. Gosh, a bit of philosophy crept in... it'd very early here.

Nice King! I really liked your slide show of the S-9. Too bad you had to sell it......... to someone else but me! Like I said, nice King!
