My new Upton bass arrived last Friday (nine days ago) and I couldn't be more pleased. I had originally ordered a Hawkes but good news on the tax return and a little bonus at work elevated me to the hybrid Medio Fino. Since this is my first (and maybe my last DB) I won't even try to offer any kind of objective description. Once I got it unpacked and set the bridge (a semi-idiot proofed process) I commenced with tuning to pitch.
Playing pizzacato, I was thinking this is nice, good sound, great action, pretty easy to move up and down the neck. String height is good with the bridge at the lowest position. Then, I took up my bow. Now, I played the fiddle for a few years but this was my first experience with the bow and the DB. The bass vibrated, the bow vibrated, I vibrated. Arco on this bass is a very visceral experience. It may be on others, I don't know but I'm hooked.
I can post pictures but it looks like reedo35's bass only with a Revolution Solo PU. The finish is a little less cherry and more dark brown than it appears in the photos. I did get the cheater dots on the side of the fb. During the day, I can see them but at night there's not enough light in the room to make them easy to find. So, they're helping my ear develop since I can use them to check myself as I get used to the longer scale length but I can't count on them so I'd better listen.
Jack and Gary were great to work with. Gary talked me through my background and we went with a "Gary setup" which makes me think he's done this a few times before. They were a little backed up so it took about seven weeks from order to delivery. Communication was great and I hope I didn't bother them too much. I just missed the free shipping, but I couldn't wait anymore even if I could have got it shipped free. Add me to the list of satisfied Upton clientele.
