My Shen

I just opened up a photobucket account and I wanted an opportunity to show my Shen SB200 (maple roundback).

I hope you like 'em.
Joe

I actually purchased this bass in the Feb. of 2000 from Paul Strelau. I'm sorry that I didn't mention that in my original post. I finally got around to registering at photobucket to post my pictures. I'm kind of a late bloomer when it comes to posting things on the Internet. TB has helped me learn how to upload and link to files. Sorry for the confusion.

Maybe this isn't the place for this, but I'm curious; what's with the edges on these basses being so much lighter than the rest of the varnish? Looks wierd to me... My Shen is light around the edges a bit now, but it's only from wear; when I got it they were all the same tone as the rest of the bass. (It wasn't varnished from the factory, but purchased white and varnished later.)

Are you sure? Could it be a shadow in the picture that you're seeing?

I know who you are and that you know what you're talking about. You built a bass for my colleague a couple years ago. He's a high school orchestra director in the Buffalo area; Jim. Beautiful bass!

If fact, here it is:

Look familiar?

I will take a look at my bridge, but I think it's in good shape. Thanks for the heads-up.

I know what you're saying, but I kind of like how it looks. I'm pretty sure that it's not a hand-rubbed varnish. That would have costed a little more.

Joe, it just looks like it's angling a little toward the fingerboard. Hi to Jim!

I'm curious. In which picture did you spot this?

I believe Volker Nahrmann is still having the maple roundbacks made for him.

Not all the Shens look the same partly because I believe the Maples are all finished with spirit varnish and the Willows are all finished with oil. I've noticed what you point but only ever on the Maple Shens, not the Willows.

Wow! That's a beautiful instrument! I sure would like the opportunity to play one of those here in the UK.

Anyone know of a supplier for Shen instruments on this side of the pond?

I was at Paul Strelau's shop in Fairport, NY today and we talked about the light colored edges. He said that the edges are made like that on purpose. The bass is varnised and then the edges are wiped. This keeps the bass from showing wear on the edges where it touches the floor. Makes sense. I looked at some of the basses in his showroom and some of them had dark edges while others had a mild lightness to them. Mine has very light edges, but that never bothered me. I love how it played and sounded.

I also learned that the maple round backs are still being made; however, they are more expensive.
