Unless you find a super deal on a used bass, $1000 isn't going to be enough money. Finding such a deal is unlikely, and unless you're an experienced player, you'll not be able judge the used basses you're looking at.
$1500 is where your budget should start for a plywood bass. Since you're going to be an orchestra player, you might want to avoid plywood basses and budget more ($2000-$3500).
I'd consider Shen's hybrid and carved models. These basses are offer exceptional value and are great starter instruments.
If you don't have the money, consider renting a good bass from a reputable shop that specializes in basses.
