hey, i have auditions coming up later in the month and im in desperate need of a way to move my bass from place to place and i dont own a flight case cuz they are like 2500$. renting one also seems ridiculously expensive, 430$ to ship and 100$ a week. what should i do? any suggestions?

buy an extra airplane ticket for your bass. You can still do this on many airlines- I've done it on United, Continental and Frontier. I also know someone who will buy an entire row on Delta for him and his bass. Get a bulkhead seat, and make sure you are on a plane that will allow basses (certain Boeings I've encountered are laid out in such a way that the bulkhead rows are the same as the exit rows, which won't work for a bass).

Are these auditions for college or for a symphony gig?

You don't know anybody who could lend you their's? That's what I used to do before I realized owning a flight case was a necessity.

I guess if you need to take several different flights, the cost of buying extra seats for the bass would be similar to buying a flight case. Check with your local symphony, and ask local pros about who might have one you can borrow or rent locally. Or, call ahead to the schools you'll be visiting and see if there are quality instruments that you'd be able to borrow there.
