They are selling Chen Basses that are fantastic student instruments at the same price as the one your son just tried out but produce a much superior sound and retain their value over time. I see no reason why you couldn't get an Upton/New Standard/Shen Willow through your local guy and thereby eat your cake and have it too.

It might cost you a little more money up front, but that will pay dividends over the years, whether in adjustments, strings or sharing of knowledge.
